Guide · Training conditions

Understand ageing time, wind and ground in tracking.

One number never explains a search. Only ageing time, wind and surface together show the conditions under which the dog worked.

01

True ageing time needs two timestamps.

The relevant period runs from the end of laying to the start of the search. Record both moments instead of relying on an estimate.

  • Record the end of laying
  • Record the start of the search
  • Derive ageing time automatically or manually
02

Weather can change while the track ages.

Wind, temperature and precipitation at laying time may differ from search time. Two snapshots show what actually changed.

  • Weather when laying
  • Weather when working the track
  • Temperature and wind differences
03

Ground is more than field or grass.

Moisture, vegetation and terrain changes matter. Compare similar sessions first and vary only a few conditions at a time.

  • Separate surface and condition
  • Mark terrain changes
  • Assess patterns across several sessions

Frequently asked questions

Good to know.

Is a longer ageing time always more difficult?

Not in isolation. Wind, moisture, ground, terrain and the individual dog all shape the task.

Is weather at laying time enough?

For a rough note perhaps, but meaningful comparisons benefit from a second snapshot at search time.

How do reliable patterns emerge?

From several consistently documented sessions with comparable designs, not from a single track.
