Rules explained · IFH tracking

IFH 1, 2, 3 and IGP-FH compared clearly.

IFH progressively adds endurance, varied geometry and cross-tracks. This overview follows the 2025 FCI regulations and clearly separates trial requirements from flexible day-to-day training.

IFH 1 begins with a handler-laid trackIFH 2 and 3 include a cross-trackIGP-FH comprises two IFH 3 tracks
01

IFH 1: a long introduction on the handler’s own track.

IFH 1 has at least 800 paces, five legs, four approximately right-angle corners and three articles. The handler-laid track ages for at least 90 minutes. The dog has 30 minutes to work it on a ten-metre line.

  • Handler-laid · at least 800 paces
  • 5 legs · 4 corners · 3 articles
  • 90 minutes ageing · 30 minutes working time
02

IFH 2: a track laid by another person with a cross-track.

The track has at least 1,200 paces, seven legs, six corners and four articles. A second person crosses the original track. After at least 120 minutes of ageing, the dog has 30 minutes to work.

  • Another tracklayer · at least 1,200 paces
  • 7 legs · 6 corners · 4 articles
  • Cross-track · 120 minutes ageing
03

IFH 3 and IGP-FH: maximum endurance and geometry.

IFH 3 has at least 1,800 paces, eight legs including a semicircle, seven corners including two acute corners, and seven articles. It ages for at least 180 minutes and has a 45-minute working limit. IGP-FH consists of two IFH 3 tracks on two days, on different terrain and laid by different people.

  • IFH 3: semicircle and two acute corners
  • 7 articles · cross-track · 180 minutes ageing
  • IGP-FH: two IFH 3 tracks on two days

Frequently asked questions

Good to know.

Is a curve the same as an open corner?

No. A curve changes direction continuously; an open corner remains a distinct direction change. They should be documented separately in design and analysis.

What is a cross-track?

A second person crosses the original track according to the regulations. The dog is expected to continue following the original scent track.

Does this overview apply unchanged everywhere?

The FCI rules provide the basis. National organisations may add procedural provisions, so the latest official version is decisive.
